About the song:
Van Goat’s latest single, Bad Boy Drunk, is a shot of country rock escapism influenced by Beck’s Mutations, The Rolling Stones’ Let it Bleed, and The Byrds’ ‘Sweethearts Of The Rodeo’.
Singer Aidan Ward wrote the lyrics while deciding to quit his dead-end job. In this mindset, he crafted a disappointed but defiantly upbeat reflection on life, calling the song “a ballad about happiness and what it takes to find it.” He continues, “the fewer things we have, the fewer things we have to concern ourselves with. Likewise, the fewer things we endeavor to achieve in comparison to others, the easier it is to notice the beauty of the world around us and to feel at ease within it. But sometimes we get ‘bad boy drunk’ and make decisions that undermine our happiness.”
‘Bad Boy Drunk’ is a sonic detour for swing punks, Van Goat. Derek Burle explains “we kept our high energy, big, danceable sound and tried exploring new genres for many of the songs on this new record.” Van Goat channels classic country with twangy finger pickin’ and slide, soaring harmonies and honky-tonk piano backed by a country shuffle.
